Most people arrive at their first portrait session having put this off for years. Here are some of the most common reasons why.

The Real Reason People Come Here.

I kept thinking I’d do it when I looked the way I wanted to look, or when something significant enough had happened. I’m still waiting.
I lost 60 pounds and never documented it. That version of me deserved to be honored.
I kept getting passed over for board seats. Someone finally told me my online presence didn't match my reputation in the room.
I've changed more in the last two years than in the decade before. I don't look like that person anymore. I'm still using those photos.
The people I love are aging. I can see it. And I keep finding reasons to wait instead of reasons to go.
I don’t have a single good photo of my mother and me together. Now I never will.

You already know. That's enough.

Testimonials.

This is what people say after.

350+ sessions. 75% of them repeat or referred. People don't come back for photos. They come back for what it felt like to be seen. These are a few of their stories.

Your Time. Your Story.

Once we start shooting. I stop planning. I just follow you.

01

It starts before you arrive

The conversation we have before the shoot is why the shoot works. You show up knowing what we're building. I show up knowing who you are. Nothing catches either of us off guard. That's when I can stop planning and just follow you. By the time we start shooting, you've already forgotten to be nervous.

02

Direction, not posing

There is a difference between being told how to stand and being given something real to do. I work in the second way. The images that matter come from the moment after a direction lands, not from holding a position until it looks right.

03

A record, not a folder

What you receive is not a collection of nice photos. It is documentation of who you are at this exact moment in your life. Before this chapter closes. Before the next one opens. That is worth something different than a photo shoot. That is what this is.

About Your Photographer

Portrait Photographer

Hi, I’m Alvin.

The best images don't come from a perfect setup. They come from someone feeling seen before the camera ever comes out.

I don't photograph what I think you should look like. I photograph who you are.

There's a longer version of why I believe that.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) | Let’s Get You Answers

Most people have never worked with a photographer one-on-one before. That’s completely normal. Here’s what tends to come up.

What actually happens?

A planning conversation first, and that's where we figure out the details together. Location, timing, what to wear, how long you'll need. You don't have to arrive with any of that sorted. You just have to reach out. Everything else is in the planning call.

What should we wear?

Whatever makes you feel like you. At your request, I'll send a personalized style guide once you're booked.

What is the price for a session?

Sessions start at $495. Most people find what they need within the standard tiers. But if you have something specific in mind, tell me what you're thinking. We'll build from there.

Do you travel for sessions?

Yes. Based in Northern Virginia, available throughout DC, Maryland, and the greater DMV.

Is this only for people who are comfortable being photographed?

It's mostly for people who aren't. The clients who get the most out of a session are usually the ones who came in most uncertain about it. Comfort in front of a camera isn't something you bring, it's something that develops over the course of the session. I've never photographed someone who left feeling the way they felt when they arrived.

How does the payment schedule work?

A 50% deposit holds your date. The remaining balance is due on the day of your session. I accept all major payment methods and handle everything securely online.

Do you offer a referral program?

When someone you refer books a session, you receive a $75 credit toward your next one and they get $50 off their first. No limit on referrals. Share what moved you, and I'll take care of the rest.

Will the final photos be retouched?

Every image you receive is professionally edited and color-corrected. The goal isn't to change how you look, it's to make sure what's true about you in the frame comes through clearly.

What happens during the pre-planning call?

This is where the session actually starts. We talk through the details, location, timing, what you're wearing, what you're going for. It's also your chance to ask anything. If you'd rather sort the details over email or voice message instead of a call, that works too.

How many images do I receive?

Anywhere from 15 to 75+ depending on your session. Every image in your gallery is there because it earned its place.

How long until I receive my photos?

Your gallery is delivered within two weeks of your session. Larger projects run closer to three weeks. If you have a deadline coming up tell me upfront and I'll do everything I can to work around it.

Who qualifies for Generation One?

First-generation college students in the DMV, Washington DC, Maryland, and Northern Virginia, who will be the first in their immediate family to earn a four-year college degree. Current students, recently accepted students, and recent graduates are all eligible.

How do I apply for Generation One?

Visit peopleinthiscity.com/generation-one and complete the short application. Sessions are offered on a limited basis each year. There is no cost and no catch.

Is Generation One really free?

Yes. Completely. No session fee, no hidden costs, no obligation. Generation One exists because first-generation milestones deserve to be documented with the same intention as any other milestone worth keeping.
