HEY, I'M ALVIN
I'm a father, husband, and portrait photographer based in Northern Virginia, available throughout DC, Maryland, and the greater DMV. Ten years. Hundreds of sessions. Living rooms in Vienna, studios in DC, and everywhere in between: individuals, families, and organizations including Lululemon, Ferro Salon, and SheShouldRun among them.
Here is what I believe: kindness and straight talk belong in the same conversation. You show up as yourself, and the images take care of the rest. That part I can promise.
Every session is brand new to me. New energy, new person, fresh start, same standard. I meet you where you are, whether it’s a feeling, a chapter, or something you can’t quite name yet, my job is to hold all of it and find what’s true. That instinct didn’t start in a studio. It started at home.
I was writing a blog about being a good father and a better man. I needed images that said something real. Stock photos didn’t. So I picked up a camera and learned to make portraits that did. When I’m not shooting, I’m overthinking coffee brewing methods, chasing new music, and spending time with my family. The overthinking applies to all three.
Shoot day is unhurried, organized, and low pressure. Before we ever get there we've already talked through the details. What I need from you is simple. Just show up. You don't need to look like a model you've seen in a magazine, a family you've seen on TV, or your favorite executive. Just show up as you.
I don't photograph what I think you should look like. I photograph who you are.
Posing isn't the work. Finding what's real is.
• INDIVIDUALS
You've been waiting for the right moment, the right version of yourself, the right reason. None of that is coming. The one who's here right now, the one without the edits, that's who gets photographed.
• PROFESSIONALS
You've done the work. Let it show. Not the polished version, not the one practiced in a mirror. The one that walks into the meeting already knowing why it's there.
• COUPLES
Not perfect. True. The closeness, the inside jokes, the quiet you've stopped noticing because you live inside it. We hold all of it, before this season becomes the last one.
• EXECUTIVES
You carry a room before you speak. People decide something about you before you say a word, and your image is part of that decision. This is what it looks like when it's working for you instead of against you.
• FAMILIES
These years move fast. You feel it on ordinary Sundays, in the way they still reach for you when they think no one's watching. This is your family as they actually are, the noise and the closeness, the twenty-years-from-now you haven't met yet.
• FOUNDERS
You're the face of what you built. People find you before they find your work, so what they see has to be true. Let what they discover when they look for you be the actual thing.
The right ones are not defined by what they do, what they look like, or how ready they feel. They are defined by one decision. To stop letting the moment pass undocumented. If you made it to this page, you already know which one you are.
WHY “PEOPLE IN THIS CITY”?
The name started as a project inspired by Humans of New York. I’ve always been drawn to people’s stories, the quiet details, the unexpected humor, the weight they carry without saying a word. Over the course of documenting more than a thousand stories, I realized something: the name had become less about the project and more about the work itself.
I kept it because it’s true to what I do.
When I photograph someone, I’m not looking to create a version of them. I’m looking for the version that already exists, the one that shows up when they’re not performing, not trying to get it right. My job is to create the conditions where that can happen. To slow things down. To make space for what’s real.
Anyone can produce an image. Not everyone can find the version of you that's worth keeping.
Generation One is a recent extension of that. Each year I offer complimentary portrait sessions to first-generation college students in the DMV, because some people deserve to be seen before the world asks anything of them. If you work with first-generation students, that makes you part of how this reaches them.
