Most of the sessions I photograph don’t happen in a studio. They happen on a trail in Great Falls right before the light drops. On a quiet street in Old Town Alexandria that we had to ourselves for twenty minutes. In a field in Loudoun County that someone drove past a hundred times before we finally stopped and used it. In a backyard in Northern Virginia where a couple had lived for years and never thought to document it.

Outdoor sessions work because the environment does some of the work for you. The light is real. The space gives people room to move. And when someone isn’t standing in front of a backdrop wondering what to do with their hands, something shifts — they stop performing and start just being there.

That’s when the images happen.

What outdoor sessions are good for:

  • Portraits that feel lived-in rather than posed
  • Couples and families who want context around them, not just a clean background
  • Personal branding that shows you in your element, not a controlled setting
  • Anyone who tightens up indoors and loosens up outside

I shoot in natural light across DC, Maryland, and Northern Virginia — parks, neighborhoods, waterfronts, city blocks, private properties. If you have a location in mind, bring it. If you don’t, I will.

Either way, we figure it out together before we ever show up.
