The Stoop on Union Street

Some sessions don’t start with a plan. They start with a walk.
We spent the first part of the session moving through Old Town Alexandria, no agenda, just looking. The light was doing what late afternoon light does in that neighborhood: finding its way through the trees, bouncing off the brick, making everything feel a little warmer than it actually was.
Then we found the stoop.
The background was right. The light was right. The way he settled into the space, relaxed, present, not performing anything, was right. So we stopped. We worked it for a while. A few frames from here, a few from there. Nothing complicated.
That’s how most of the best portraits happen. Not from a shot list. From paying attention to what’s already there and being ready when it lines up.
There’s a version of a portrait session where everything is planned in advance, the location, the look, the mood. That version has its place. But there’s another version where you show up, you walk, you look, and you trust that the right moment will find you if you stay patient enough to let it.
That’s the version I prefer.
If you’ve been thinking about a session and aren’t sure what it should look like, that’s actually the right place to start. We’ll figure out the rest together.
